Synopsis
The Girl King (2015) is a historical drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Finland's Mika Kaurismäki. It follows Queen Kristina of Sweden from the beginning of her adult reign: she inherited the throne at six, surrounded herself with philosophers and scholars, and grew into a ruler the Swedish council had no idea how to manage.
The council wanted war; Kristina wanted the largest library in Stockholm. They demanded she marry and produce an heir; she refused on both counts. Malin Buska plays Kristina with a focused intensity that never reads as performance — she simply inhabits someone who has decided she will not be managed. Sarah Gadon and Mikael Nyqvist round out the central cast.
