Synopsis
Safe (1995) is a watch-online drama on iFILM written and directed by Todd Haynes, with Julianne Moore as Carol White — a San Fernando Valley housewife whose body begins to revolt against her own life. Quietly, without melodrama, and with no clear explanation.
It starts with a chemical smell at the dry cleaner's. Then a seizure on the freeway. Doctors run every test they have and find nothing wrong. Carol becomes convinced that the air in her house, the upholstery, the pesticides on her roses are making her sick — a condition she eventually names as "environmental illness" or, in the parlance of the period, Twentieth Century Disease. She eventually leaves her husband and her suburb for a desert wellness retreat in New Mexico.
Haynes shoots the film like a horror movie without a monster: wide-angle compositions keep Carol small inside her own home, and Moore plays her as a woman so thoroughly erased by comfort that illness becomes her only interiority. Whether Carol is genuinely sick or whether the film is a portrait of a personality hollowed out by affluence — Haynes refuses to settle the question. Stream Safe (1995) online on iFILM.
