Synopsis

Beautiful Thing (1996) is a British coming-of-age drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Hettie Macdonald from Jonathan Harvey's own screen adaptation of his stage play. The setting is a council estate in Thamesmead, Southeast London — a concrete grid of walkways and thin walls where everyone knows everyone's business.

Jamie is quiet, routinely skips school to avoid being beaten up, and has no language yet for what he feels. His mother Sandra (Linda Henry) is loud, funny and genuinely trying. Their neighbour Ste — athletic, easy-going on the surface — starts sleeping on their couch rather than go home to a father and brother who use their fists. Put together in a small flat through a long hot summer, the two boys slowly work out what they mean to each other.

What made the film notable in 1996 — and still does — is that Harvey refused to write it as a tragedy. For a gay coming-of-age story at that moment, that was almost a political act. The film is tender without being soft, specific about its place and class, and ends on a note that few films of this type dared to reach for. Watch Beautiful Thing online on iFILM.
