Synopsis

The Boxer (1997) is an Irish-British drama directed by Jim Sheridan that you can watch online on iFILM. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Danny Flynn, a man walking out of prison after fourteen years back into a Belfast that still runs on IRA politics and unspoken rules.

Danny wants two things: to box again, and to be near Maggie — Emily Watson — the woman he left behind when he was arrested as a teenager. She's married to another IRA prisoner now, raising a son alone, and the organization watches everything. Danny reopens a gym with his old trainer and runs it as a non-sectarian club, open to both sides. In a neighborhood like his, that's a political act, not just a sporting one. Brian Cox plays an IRA commander trying to keep a fragile ceasefire from collapsing. Sheridan shoots Belfast without any mythologizing — wet pavements, quiet menace, people who are tired of all of it.

Day-Lewis plays it with an unusual restraint for him, and that stillness is what gives the film its weight. Stream The Boxer (1997) online on iFILM.
