Wicked City

Wicked City (1987) is a dark animated feature from director Yoshiaki Kawajiri — watch it online on iFILM. Produced by Madhouse and adapted from Hideyuki Kikuchi's manga, this 82-minute horror-fantasy was made for adult audiences: explicit violence, erotic scenes, and a genuinely unsettling atmosphere across every frame.

The premise turns a diplomatic procedural into a monster film. A centuries-old peace treaty between Earth and the Black World — a parallel dimension populated by shape-shifting demons — is up for renewal. Two special agents are assigned to protect the diplomat who must sign it: Taki, human, and Maki, a demon from the other side. The faction trying to stop them sends creatures that look perfectly human until they don't. Trust is a liability in a city where the enemy wears any face it wants.

Kawajiri built his reputation on exactly this kind of work — Demon City Shinjuku, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust — and Wicked City shows the style in its raw early form: neon-soaked nights, bodies that transform into weapons, no comfortable exits.
