Synopsis
"Mononoke the Movie: The Phantom in the Rain" (2024) is a Japanese anime fantasy film you can watch online on iFILM. Director Kenji Nakamura — who built the beloved 2007 series — returns with a feature-length mystery set inside the chambers of an Edo-period shogun's harem. Ninety minutes of slow-burn supernatural detection built around a premise as elegant as a lacquerware box: Form, Truth, and Reason.
Two new concubines arrive and find more than palace politics waiting for them. A vengeful mononoke spirit has taken root in the jealousy and secrets of the harem walls, and deaths follow. Only the travelling medicine seller — voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya — can drive it out, but first he must complete his ritual and name what the spirit truly is.
Nakamura's visual language is unlike anything else in animation: flat planes of colour, geometric compositions, imagery drawn straight from ukiyo-e woodblock prints. It moves like a painting that learned to breathe. Fans of "Mushishi" will find it immediately familiar. Watch "Mononoke the Movie: The Phantom in the Rain" online on iFILM.
