Crashing (Season 1)

Crashing (2016) is a British comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM, written by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge a full year before Fleabag put her on the map. Six twentysomethings share a decommissioned London hospital as property guardians — they get to live there almost rent-free, provided someone is always on site.

Waller-Bridge plays Lulu, a natural disaster in human form who crashes back into the lives of her ex and his new girlfriend and systematically upends every comfortable arrangement in the building. Jonathan Bailey is here in an early role, alongside Damien Molony, Louise Ford, and Amit Shah. Channel 4 commissioned one season, six episodes — the show ends before it can outstay its welcome.

Watching it now is like finding the rough draft of Fleabag: the fourth-wall breaks aren't there yet, but the instinct is. Characters lie to themselves with enormous confidence, the comedy cuts when you don't expect it to, and Waller-Bridge already knew exactly how far to push before pulling back.
