In a sleepy seaside town, seventeen-year-old Emelia takes a maid's job at a run-down family hotel. Brash, well-read and set on writing a novel, she quickly bonds with shy classmate Beth — while starting an affair with Beth's father Jonathan, an author who published one book and then ran dry. The friendship and the affair pull the girl in opposite directions.

Niall MacCormick films Emelia as a charming wrecking ball: she's a delight to be around until she flattens someone's life. Felicity Jones plays the dutiful Beth, Julia Ormond the worn-out mother.
