About

Synopsis

Max (2002) is Menno Meyjes' historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Munich, 1918. The war is lost, the city is seething, and a Jewish art dealer is scouting fresh talent on the streets.

John Cusack plays Max Rothman, a charming gallery owner who left an arm at the front and, half out of boredom, takes a broke and bitter veteran under his wing. The veteran carries a folder of lifeless watercolors. His name is Adolf Hitler (Noah Taylor). What grows between them is a jittery friendship-cum-argument: Max pushes him toward painting, while the younger man keeps drifting into political speeches — where, unsettlingly, he's far more gifted.

Meyjes builds the whole film on a provocative what-if: could history have turned inside an artist's studio? This isn't a biopic but an invented encounter framed around a real life, which makes it harder to shake. Cold, controversial, smart. Stream Max (2002) online on iFILM.
