About

Synopsis

Vincere (2009) is Marco Bellocchio's historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. In 1914 a young Benito Mussolini still edits a socialist paper, nowhere near power — and Ida Dalser, hopelessly in love, hands the future dictator everything she owns.

She bears him a son and believes she has become the wife of a rising politician. Once Mussolini seizes power, that past turns dangerous: the new regime scrubs the woman and the boy out of his official story. Ida refuses to stay quiet, and her stubbornness costs her freedom — she is shut away inside a psychiatric asylum. Giovanna Mezzogiorno plays the obsession with no trace of self-pity, while Filippo Timi takes on both Mussolinis, father and son.

Bellocchio didn't make a dictator's biopic but the story of a woman erased. Operatic music, scraps of silent newsreel and near-expressionist lighting turn private heartbreak into a statement about how fascism rewrote reality. The film competed for the top prize at Cannes. Heavy, powerful cinema for anyone who values European auteur film. Stream Vincere (2009) online on iFILM.
