Ida refuses to stay quiet, and her stubbornness costs her freedom — she is shut away inside a psychiatric asylum. Giovanna Mezzogiorno plays the obsession with no trace of self-pity, while Filippo Timi takes on both Mussolinis, father and son.

Bellocchio didn't make a dictator's biopic but the story of a woman erased. Operatic music, scraps of silent newsreel and near-expressionist lighting turn private heartbreak into a statement about how fascism rewrote reality. The film competed for the top prize at Cannes.
