In the final winter of the Civil War, Union officer Amos Dundee commands a stockade of Confederate prisoners in the Southwest. When an Apache war party kills three families in Texas and retreats into Mexico, Dundee is ordered to pursue. Short on men, he strikes a deal with the Confederate captives: ride with him and earn their freedom. Riding beside him — and in constant opposition — is their captain, Tyreen (Richard Harris), a man who despises Dundee but keeps his word.
