Synopsis

Husbands (1970) is John Cassavetes' drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. The director takes one of the three leads himself, alongside Ben Gazzara and Peter Falk. When a close friend drops dead of a heart attack, three middle-aged married men suddenly stare down their own mortality.

They don't go home after the funeral. Instead they vanish into a two-day bender — drinking till dawn, shooting hoops, sleeping rough on the subway, talking around the youth that slipped away. One of them blows up his marriage and flies to London, and the other two tag along. In a London casino the trio chase strangers, trying to convince themselves freedom is still theirs to grab. The proof turns out bitter.

Cassavetes shot it almost like documentary — long unstaged scenes, raw improvisation, a camera that won't look away from the awkwardness. It's a hard, honest film about the fear of dying and the bond between men, and a cornerstone of American independent cinema. Not a cozy night in; the discomfort is the point.
