Synopsis
Bread and Tulips (Pane e tulipani, 2000) is an Italian romantic comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Director Silvio Soldini made it as a small, oddly radiant film about a woman who discovers almost by accident that she is capable of a completely different life.
Rosalba is left behind at a rest stop when her family's tour bus pulls away. Rather than rushing straight home, she hitches a series of rides and ends up in Venice — a city she had always meant to visit and never quite reached. Licia Maglietta plays her without any drama-school weight; this is not a midlife crisis or a feminist manifesto, just a woman quietly learning what she enjoys. In Venice she rents a room, takes a job at a local restaurant, and meets Fernando, a gentle Icelandic waiter played by Bruno Ganz.
The film took Italy's David di Donatello Award for Best Film and quietly found audiences across Europe who recognised something honest in it. Soldini never forces the sentiment — no grand speeches, no tearful confrontations, just the specific pleasure of someone doing exactly what suits them. Stream Bread and Tulips (2000) online on iFILM.
