Synopsis

The Bridge (Die Brücke, 1959) is a West German anti-war film directed by Bernhard Wicki, available to watch online on iFILM. Based on Gregor Dorfmeister's novel, it competed for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 1960 and remains one of the starkest documents European cinema produced about the war's final days.

Spring, 1945. The Reich is crumbling, American forces pushing deeper into Germany by the hour. Seven teenage boys are pulled from their classroom and handed rifles. Their commanding officer quietly arranges for them to guard a bridge of no tactical value — a way of keeping them out of the real fighting. The boys don't know that. They believe in the mission, they believe in the uniform, and when American tanks roll toward them they fight with everything they have.

Wicki shot the film with a near-documentary coolness that strips out any trace of grandeur. No sweeping score, no speeches — just teenagers discovering at enormous cost what the textbook patriotism they'd been fed was actually worth. For viewers who know the outcome before the first frame, that foreknowledge makes it almost unbearable. Stream The Bridge (1959) online on iFILM.
