Synopsis
Nazarín (1959) is Luis Buñuel's Mexican drama, available to watch online on iFILM. A humble priest tries to live strictly by the Gospel and finds the world repays his goodness with ruin rather than gratitude.
Father Nazario gives away what little he owns and shelters a streetwalker accused of a deadly knifing. The church strips him of his collar, so he sets off on foot as a wandering beggar. Two women, each fleeing troubles of her own, fall in step behind him. And the more sincerely he does good, the more harm seems to trail him and everyone he touches.
Buñuel shot the film in Mexico from a Benito Pérez Galdós novel and took the Grand Prix at Cannes for it. Dressed up as a saint's life, it poses a quiet, needling question: can pure Christian virtue survive contact with real, ordinary people. Bracing, ironic cinema for anyone drawn to Buñuel and big questions left deliberately open. Stream Nazarín (1959) online on iFILM.
