His supervisor Makima is measuring him for something. New partners Aki and Power come with their own problems.

Part 1 lays the foundation: where Denji came from, what he actually wants out of life (his ambitions are genuinely modest for someone who becomes a supernatural weapon), and what kind of show this is — violent and dark, but anchored by something lonelier than the premise suggests.
