Synopsis

Han Gong-ju (2014) is a Korean drama from director Lee Su-jin you can watch online on iFILM. Seventeen-year-old Gong-ju has to switch schools and rebuild her life after something she flatly refuses to talk about.

Left on her own by her parents, she's taken in by a former teacher's mother in a town where nobody knows her face. Gong-ju does her best to pass for an ordinary student — she makes a friend, sings, learns to swim. But the past she fled keeps inching closer, and the film lets out what happened in slow, careful pieces. Cheon Woo-hee carries the whole picture with almost no dialogue, mostly through her eyes.

Lee Su-jin's first feature draws on a notorious real case and lands on a raw nerve: the blame a society dumps on the victim instead of on the people who earned it. "I didn't do anything wrong" is the line the whole story circles. The part won Cheon Woo-hee best new actress, and the film took the Tiger Award at Rotterdam. Quiet and heavy, it's for viewers ready for an honest story told without sensationalism. Stream Han Gong-ju (2014) online on iFILM.
