Synopsis
Design for Living (1933) is a Hollywood romantic comedy directed by Ernst Lubitsch that you can watch online on iFILM. Fredric March, Gary Cooper, and Miriam Hopkins lead the cast: two broke American friends — an unproduced playwright and a struggling painter sharing a Paris flat — both fall for the same sharp, independent woman.
Gilda won't choose between them. Instead she proposes a gentleman's agreement: she'll be their friend, their critic, their sounding board — nothing more. The arrangement collapses almost immediately, and the film's pleasure is watching all three try to rebuild it on slightly different terms each time. Lubitsch keeps everything light, working through raised eyebrows and perfectly timed silences rather than slapstick.
Pre-Code Paramount let him get away with a frankly unconventional love triangle that wouldn't have made it past the Hays Office a year later — which gives the film an ease and warmth that's rare for the era. Stream Design for Living (1933) on iFILM.
