Synopsis

The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019) is Armando Iannucci's comic Dickens adaptation, ready to watch online on iFILM. Dev Patel plays David, an orphan who climbs from a brutal bottling factory and a debtors' prison toward fame as a storyteller, the gift that will eventually carry him.

Victorian England here is no museum piece but a circus of eccentrics. Peter Capaldi's perpetually broke Mr. Micawber, Tilda Swinton's prickly Aunt Betsey Trotwood, Hugh Laurie's gentle, kite-flying Mr. Dick, Ben Whishaw's oily Uriah Heep, each one barges in like a fully formed joke. Iannucci deliberately cast a wide-ranging ensemble, shrugging off any fusty notion of how Dickens is "supposed" to look.

The man behind The Thick of It and The Death of Stalin hands his trademark verbal velocity to a 19th-century classic, and the coming-of-age tale comes out brisk, bright, and surprisingly funny. It's charming and a touch chaotic, but Patel holds the whole thing together. Made for anyone who likes their Dickens dusted off and quick on its feet.
