The Winning Season

The Winning Season (2009) is Jim Strouse's bittersweet sports comedy, and you can watch online on iFILM. Bill, a washed-up basketball coach who drinks more than he should, gets an unlikely second chance when the local high school hands him its girls' team.

Sam Rockwell plays Bill as nobody's role model — he grumbles, sips from a flask, and has no clue how to talk to teenage girls. The squad he inherits matches him: a handful of students who lose almost every game and barely dream of winning one. Emma Roberts and Rooney Mara turn up among them. Out of all that mutual irritation, something like trust slowly grows, and the season ends up mattering to Bill far more than any line in the standings.

Strouse keeps it unsentimental: this isn't about the perfect buzzer-beater, it's about a grown man learning to show up for other people while barely holding himself together. Rockwell carries the whole thing on charm, while Margo Martindale and Rob Corddry add the laughs. A small, slightly melancholy movie for anyone who prefers real losers to glossy champions.
