Synopsis
The Girl (2012) is a television drama you can watch online on iFILM. Toby Jones plays Alfred Hitchcock and Sienna Miller is Tippi Hedren, the model the director turned into a star and then into an obsession.
Hitchcock's wife Alma (Imelda Staunton) spots Hedren in a TV commercial, and an unknown model is suddenly whisked to Universal for the lead in The Birds. The shoot becomes an ordeal — live birds instead of mechanical ones, take after punishing take — while the man behind the camera lets his attention curdle into something darker. The story views Hollywood's golden age from underneath, through a woman with no one to complain to.
It rests on two performances: Jones builds Hitchcock without caricature, and Miller plays fear and stubbornness at once. Drawn from Donald Spoto's biography and Hedren's own account, it's less gossip than a study of what fame costs. Good for anyone drawn to films about filmmaking and the uglier side of famous names.
