Police

Police (1985) is a French crime drama by Maurice Pialat, available to watch online on iFILM. Paris inspector Mangin beats confessions out of suspects without a flicker of guilt — until a quiet young woman named Noria is brought into the interrogation room.

Mangin (Gérard Depardieu) is working a case against three Tunisian brothers moving heroin through the city. Among the people he hauls in is Noria (Sophie Marceau), girlfriend to one of them. She lies easily, gives away nothing, fears no one. The inspector, used to controlling every room he walks into, starts to come apart. Noria, meanwhile, plays him, the brothers' lawyer (Richard Anconina), and the two million francs she has lifted off the gang.

Pialat films it almost like a documentary — long takes, raw arguments, not a trace of gloss. Depardieu took the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at Venice in 1985 for this performance.
