What waits on the island is no paradise: poverty, sickness and long stretches of solitude. Still, Gauguin finds his colors and a young Tahitian woman, Tehura (Tuheï Adams), who becomes his wife and his model. Their bond runs on desire, jealousy and a wide gulf of age and power, and out of it come the canvases that later made his name. Director Édouard Deluc draws on the painter's own journal, Noa Noa, and skips the glossy biopic varnish; Cassel plays him aging, broke and obsessed.
