Jumping the Broom

Sabrina's mother is polished, formal, and utterly convinced her way is the right way. Jason's mother is loud, loving, and arriving from Brooklyn with zero intention of playing by anybody else's rules. The clash between Angela Bassett and Loretta Devine — the two mothers — is the engine of the film, and they're both fantastic. Meagan Good, Mike Epps, and Tasha Smith fill out a big ensemble that keeps the comedy moving even when the drama gets heavy.

Underneath the jokes there's a real question about how much family history two people can carry into a new life together. Director Akil handles it without going preachy. A genuinely enjoyable watch for anyone who has ever survived a family gathering. Stream Jumping the Broom (2011) on iFILM.
