The Rose of Versailles (ベルサイユのばら, 1979) is a landmark Japanese anime series you can watch online on iFILM, based on Riyoko Ikeda's acclaimed manga set in France in the years before the Revolution.

General de Jarjayes had no male heir, so he raised his daughter Oscar as a son — training her for combat, dressing her as a man, and entering her into royal service. By the age of fourteen, Oscar de Jarjayes earns command of the personal guard protecting Marie Antoinette. The series follows her through Versailles, with its beauty and its cruelty, and out toward the streets of Paris, where the anger of ordinary people is building toward something irreversible. Her childhood companion André is always close; what that closeness means, the series takes its time to reveal.
