Synopsis
Crisis (Kris, 1946) is a Swedish melodrama you can watch online on iFILM, and it carries a special weight for film buffs: this is Ingmar Bergman's very first feature, his directorial debut. The story follows Nelly, a young woman raised in a quiet provincial town by her foster mother, a gentle piano teacher.
That calm life cracks open when Nelly's biological mother arrives from Stockholm and pulls the girl into the city. New temptations and unfamiliar rules come with it. Then the mother's young lover turns up, and Nelly finds herself caught in a love triangle she was never prepared for. She has to choose between two women, two cities, and two versions of the life ahead of her.
Bergman made Crisis at twenty-seven, working from someone else's play, and later called the shoot a painful ordeal. Yet the themes that would define his whole career are already here: guilt, coming of age, the pull between duty and desire. It is a fascinating watch if you want to see where one of the great directors of the twentieth century began, long before The Seventh Seal or Wild Strawberries. Stream Crisis (1946) online on iFILM.
