Synopsis
The Swordsman (검객, 2020) is a South Korean historical action film directed by Choi Jae-hoon — watch it online on iFILM. Jang Hyuk stars alongside Joe Taslim in a stripped-down revenge story set against the chaos of 1623 Joseon.
After a coup topples the king, the kingdom's greatest swordsman retreats into hiding. He is going blind. He wants nothing more to do with power or violence. Then Qing Dynasty slavers raid his village and take his daughter. The sword comes back out.
What drives the film is close-quarters choreography rather than plot architecture. Jang Hyuk commits fully — the fights are deliberate, tactile, unhurried until they aren't. Joe Taslim brings genuine menace as the Qing commander hunting a worthy opponent.
