Synopsis
Passage to Marseille (1944) is a WWII war picture from director Michael Curtiz — watch it online on iFILM. Humphrey Bogart and Claude Rains are reunited here, two years after Casablanca, on the same side of the same war with considerably less sentiment between them.
The story arrives in layers: a war correspondent visits a Free French air squadron camouflaged as a farm on the British coast, and the base commander tells him the history of Jean Matrac — a journalist who fought the Nazis in print, got sent to Devil's Island for it, and clawed his way back to the fight. Curtiz builds the whole thing from nested flashbacks, a structural choice that was unusual for wartime Hollywood.
Bogart's Matrac has none of the romantic ambiguity of Rick Blaine. He's been ground down to a single conviction, and the film doesn't soften it at the end. Stream Passage to Marseille (1944) on iFILM.
