Synopsis
The King's Choice (Kongens nei, 2016) is Erik Poppe's Norwegian war drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Across three days in the spring of 1940, German warships push into the Oslo fjord and a 67-year-old king is handed an impossible decision.
As the royal family and government flee the capital, a German envoy demands surrender and recognition of Quisling's puppet government. Whether Norway fights or yields comes down to one aging monarch, King Haakon VII. Jesper Christensen plays him quietly, almost wordlessly, and the film's tension lives inside that restraint. Poppe keeps the camera close and stages the fighting without spectacle.
Drawn from what actually unfolded that April, the picture was Norway's submission for the Academy Awards. If you like European war cinema stripped of Hollywood gloss, this one earns its runtime. Stream The King's Choice (2016) online on iFILM.
