Racing Extinction
It's better to light one candle than curse the darkness.
Synopsis
Racing Extinction (2015) is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Louie Psihoyos — the filmmaker who previously took home the Oscar for The Cove. Runtime: 90 minutes.
The film tracks two parallel threats to the planet's biodiversity: the black-market trade in endangered species and the invisible CO₂ emissions driving ocean acidification. Psihoyos and his team go undercover at illegal wildlife markets, use modified cameras to capture methane plumes invisible to the eye, and project extinction data onto the side of the United Nations building. Jane Goodall, Elon Musk, and coral reef scientist John Veron appear throughout. Where The Cove focused on a single dolphin hunt in Japan, this one takes on the whole mechanism of mass extinction — and it's more unsettling for the scope.
