Synopsis
The Stunt Man (1980) is an American thriller laced with dark comedy that you can watch online on iFILM. Richard Rush directed it, with Peter O'Toole and Steve Railsback up front.
Cameron, a jumpy Vietnam vet on the run from the police, ducks onto the set of a World War I movie. The previous stunt man has just died, and the film's god-like director, Eli Cross, offers him a place to hide — provided he performs the deadly stunts. Cameron takes the deal, falls for the leading lady Nina, and slowly loses track of where the movie ends and a real threat to his life begins. Cross, after all, will risk anyone for the perfect shot.
Rush spent the better part of a decade getting this made, and it landed three Oscar nominations, including a Best Actor nod for O'Toole as the most charming manipulator in pictures. Few films pull apart the lies of moviemaking while still working as a chase, a romance and a stunt reel. If you like having the rug yanked out from under you, it delivers.
