Synopsis
L'Enfer (Torment, 1994) is a French psychological thriller directed by Claude Chabrol — watch it online on iFILM. François Cluzet plays Paul, an overworked provincial hotel owner whose exhaustion quietly curdles into paranoia. His wife Nelly, played by Emmanuelle Béart, gives him no reason for suspicion. That stops mattering very quickly.
Paul becomes convinced she is sleeping with every man she speaks to — the swimming instructor, a hotel guest, a stranger at the roadside. Voices confirm it. Evidence is irrelevant. Chabrol tracks the descent with clinical patience: no melodrama, no outbursts that release tension, just the steady narrowing of a man's world until there is nothing left in it but the obsession.
The script originated with Henri-Georges Clouzot, who abandoned the production in 1964 after suffering a heart attack mid-shoot. Chabrol picked up the unfinished material thirty years later and made it entirely his own — colder, quieter and more merciless than most jealousy thrillers dare to be. The Béart-Cluzet pairing carries the whole film. Stream L'Enfer (1994) online on iFILM.
