Synopsis
Carnival of Souls (1962) is an American horror film directed by Herk Harvey on a budget of roughly thirty-three thousand dollars — watch it online on iFILM. It went largely unseen on release, then spent decades quietly terrifying filmmakers, including George Romero, who cited it openly.
Mary Henry is the only person pulled alive from a car that goes off a bridge into a river. How she survived is never explained. She takes an organist job at a church in Utah and tries to move on. Then the edges of her world start to loosen: strangers look through her like she isn't there, sound drops out without warning, and a pale, hollow-eyed man turns up wherever she goes. At the edge of town sits an abandoned lakeside pavilion she cannot stop herself from returning to.
Harvey shoots the pavilion sequences like a fever dream — the organ music Mary plays grows genuinely unsettling, and the silence in between it is worse. The dread here comes from displacement rather than threat, which is why it still works sixty years on in a way that louder films from the same era don't.
