Synopsis

Stations of the Cross (Kreuzweg, 2014) is a German drama from Dietrich Brüggemann you can watch online on iFILM. Fourteen-year-old Maria lives in two worlds at once — an ordinary school by day, and a home ruled by a strict, fundamentalist Catholicism where every thought is weighed before God.

Her family belongs to a traditionalist priestly society, and Maria comes to believe she can offer herself up as a sacrifice for the people she loves. Lea van Acken plays it quietly and devastatingly, doing most of the work with her eyes. The film is built from fourteen scenes, one for each station of Christ's via dolorosa, and nearly every one is a single locked-off shot — the camera barely moves, and there's nowhere in the frame for anyone to hide.

Dietrich and his sister Anna Brüggemann wrote it together and took the Silver Bear for screenplay at the Berlinale. Cold, exact and deeply uneasy, it studies faith bent into cruelty toward a child. Stream Stations of the Cross (2014) online on iFILM.
