Synopsis
The Sleeping Voice (La voz dormida, 2011) is a Spanish historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Benito Zambrano directs this adaptation of Dulce Chacón's novel.
It's late 1940. The war has been over for a year and a half, and Franco's grip is tightening. Pepita (Inma Cuesta) leaves rural Córdoba for Madrid, where her older sister Hortensia (María León) sits in prison — seven months pregnant and facing a death sentence. Between prison visits, scraping for work, and a romance that pulls her toward the resistance, Pepita learns how to keep going.
Zambrano frames this as a women's story of endurance after defeat — the cells, the queues outside the gates, the quiet everyday dread. María León took home a Goya for her work as Hortensia. Hard going but honest, it's one for viewers drawn to European period cinema. Stream The Sleeping Voice online on iFILM.
