Synopsis
Dust in the Wind (戀戀風塵, 1986) is a Taiwanese drama by Hou Hsiao-hsien you can watch online on iFILM. A-yuan and A-yun grow up in the mining village of Jiufen and head to Taipei — he as a print-shop apprentice studying at night, she as a tailor's helper.
Nobody ever says they're in love; everyone, the two of them included, just assumes they'll marry one day. The city has other plans. It pulls them into separate routines and separate hours, and then a conscription notice sends A-yuan off for two years of military service on the offshore islands. Time and distance don't ask what you intended.
Hou shoots it his way — long static takes, distant framing, almost no melodrama, cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bing simply watching life pass. It's a cornerstone of the Taiwanese New Wave and one of the quiet peaks of 1980s art cinema. For viewers who'd rather be carried by a glance than a speech. Stream Dust in the Wind (1986) online on iFILM.
