The Thaw

The Thaw (2009) is a Canadian sci-fi horror from director Mark A. Lewis — watch online on iFILM. Val Kilmer plays a prominent ecologist whose Arctic expedition uncovers a perfectly preserved woolly mammoth. What crawls out of that carcass is the real discovery: a prehistoric parasite, dormant for millennia, now very much alive.

Four ecology students fly in for a field placement and quickly find themselves under quarantine before anyone explains why. Aaron Ashmore and Martha MacIsaac carry the slow-burn dread well — this one works more through revulsion than jump scares, which makes it stick longer than most creature features of its budget.
