Synopsis
The King of Algiers (Omar La Fraise, 2023) is a French-Algerian crime comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Omar, nicknamed "the Strawberry," is a gangster of the old school facing twenty years in France, so he slips across the Mediterranean to Algeria with his loyal sidekick Roger.
Back on home soil, two ageing crooks try to fake an ordinary, quiet existence and fail almost immediately. Old reflexes win out: petty scams, debts, scores to settle. When a crew of younger street kids starts treating them like living legends, Omar and Roger end up turning the whole city upside down again. Reda Kateb and Benoît Magimel play the pair with no glamour at all — just fatigue, absurdity, and a strange tenderness toward a wasted past.
This is the debut feature from Elias Belkeddar, soaked in the mood of French noir and the heat of Algiers. Under the jokes sits a quieter idea: you can outrun the law, but not yourself.
