Synopsis
The Grapes of Death (Les Raisins de la mort, 1978) is a cult French horror film by Jean Rollin you can watch online on iFILM. A new pesticide sprayed across the vineyards poisons the wine, and after the harvest festival the locals start rotting alive and slaughtering anyone left standing.
Élisabeth takes a train through wine country to meet her fiancé and stumbles into the aftermath one horror at a time: villagers with decaying skin shamble through emptied farmhouses, their minds gone. There's nowhere clean to run — the whole region is contaminated, and the few people still lucid may be the most dangerous of all. She has to cross this rural nightmare alone.
Rollin, better known for his dreamy erotic vampire films, made one of France's earliest pictures with explicit gore makeup here — an effective precursor to European splatter and eco-zombie horror years before the trend caught on. Genre regular Brigitte Lahaie appears in the cast. The melancholy, the drained autumn vineyards and the slow dread make it linger longer than many bloodier rivals. One for fans of vintage cult horror. Stream The Grapes of Death (1978) online on iFILM.
