Synopsis
My Führer (Mein Führer, 2007) is a German satirical tragicomedy you can watch online on iFILM. It's December 1944 in Berlin, and a defeated Hitler no longer believes in victory or in himself.
With a New Year's speech looming and the Führer sunk in apathy, Goebbels hunts down a rhetoric coach: Jewish actor Adolf Grünbaum, hauled out of a camp with his family to teach the dictator how to inspire a nation again. Executioner and victim end up alone in the same room. Ulrich Mühe plays Grünbaum and comedian Helge Schneider plays Hitler, while director Dani Levy deliberately reduces the tyrant to a pathetic little man who sails a toy battleship in the bath and tries to train his dog Blondie to give a Nazi salute.
Making a Hitler comedy in Germany is a provocation in itself, and the film knows it — every laugh is shadowed by a hard silence. It's for viewers who like their humor pitch-black and don't mind being made uncomfortable. Stream My Führer (2007) online on iFILM.
