Synopsis
November (2017) is a black-and-white Estonian fantasy from Rainer Sarnet that you can watch online on iFILM. Adapted from Andrus Kivirähk's novel, it drops you into a dirt-poor pagan village where peasants barter their souls and bargain with devils just to make it through the winter.
The strangest wonder here is the kratt — creatures cobbled from scythes, rakes and skulls that come to life and demand work, or they'll turn on their owner. In this haunted muck, young Liina aches for a farmhand named Hans, while Hans only has eyes for the sleepwalking daughter of a German baron. The love triangle sinks into snow, swamp lights and a visit from the plague, who arrives disguised as a goat.
Sarnet blends folk dread, deadpan humor and an almost biblical sorrow, and cinematographer Mart Taniel frames every shot like a woodcut brought to life. It's slow, odd and hypnotic — not for everyone. But if you crave folk horror with no jump scares and love pure visual poetry, this one lingers. Stream November (2017) online on iFILM.
