Kateryna Verbytska was raised like a noblewoman — fluent, poised, schooled in music — and yet on paper she remains a serf, the property of the richest landowner in the district.

When her protector dies, the borrowed life collapses. Kateryna is handed to a mistress who loathes her and would happily see her dead. From there the road only darkens: she buries the people closest to her, lives through a peasant uprising, runs from a killer and from a man determined to own her at any cost. Her fight is not for romance but for the simple right to be treated as a person rather than a thing in someone else's mansion.

Kateryna Kovalchuk leads the cast, joined by Stanislav Boklan, Olga Sumska and Mykhailo Havrylov-Tretyakov. Directors Feliks Gerchikov and Maksym Lytvynov turned the cruelty of serfdom into a sweeping costume melodrama that became a ratings giant across the region.
