You’re Missing the Point

You're Missing the Point (Ahí está el detalle, 1940) is a Mexican comedy by Juan Bustillo Oro, headlined by Cantinflas, that you can watch online on iFILM. A penniless tramp sneaks into a wealthy industrialist's house to visit the maid he's courting. He's hired to shoot a rabid dog — and from there nothing goes as planned.

Caught by the master of the house, the maid blurts out that the stranger is Leonardo, her employer's long-lost brother-in-law. Conveniently, a father-in-law's will pays out only once all the brothers are reunited, so the household suddenly treats a hobo like royalty. Mistaken identities, a supposed murder and a courtroom finale follow, where Cantinflas talks rings around the prosecution with the babbling double-talk that became his signature.

Bustillo Oro made the film that turned Cantinflas into a star across all of Latin America — his gift for saying a great deal while meaning nothing even spawned the verb "cantinflear."
