Synopsis
Watch Scarlet Sails (1961) online on iFILM — a Soviet fantasy directed by Alexander Ptushko, based on Alexander Grin's short novel. It marked fifteen-year-old Anastasia Vertinskaya's screen debut: she plays Assol, a girl in a fishing village who was told by a wandering soothsayer that a ship with scarlet sails would one day come for her.
Assol lives with her father Longren, an old sailor who left the sea. The village treats them both as outsiders, and the prophecy as an old joke. Then Arthur Gray arrives — a young sea captain played by Vasily Lanovoy. Gray hears of Assol's dream and decides to make it real. Not because fate demanded it. Because he can.
Ptushko built his career on Soviet fantasy spectacle — The Stone Flower, Sadko, Ilya Muromets — and Scarlet Sails carries that same ambition: vivid color photography, a score that fills the sails, and a story about someone choosing to make a stranger's dream come true.
