Synopsis

The Return to A (Возвращение в А, 2011) is a war drama by Egor Konchalovsky you can watch online on iFILM. A young film crew from Almaty heads into Afghanistan to shoot a documentary tracing the routes of Alexander the Great. Their guide is a quiet man named Marat — someone who knows these mountains far better than he lets on.

He speaks fluent Farsi, reads the local customs, and gets along easily with people the rest of the crew are afraid of. What his travelling companions don't suspect: Marat once fought here himself, in a Muslim special-forces battalion, and lost a leg in the war. Past and present run flush against each other in jagged flashes of memory — the road to the shoot keeps turning into a road back to everything he tried to bury. Seydulla Moldakhanov plays the lead.

This Kazakh-Russian co-production is about a man who still carries a whole war inside him years after it ended. There is no battlefield bombast here; it is quiet, personal cinema about memory and obligation. Best for viewers who value slow dramas with a real emotional floor under them.
