Synopsis
Lenin's Testament (2007) is Nikolai Dostal's drama series about the writer Varlam Shalamov, and you can watch online on iFILM. It was made to mark a hundred years since the birth of the man who wrote The Kolyma Tales.
As a young communist, Shalamov is jailed for handing around a letter Lenin once addressed to the party congress — the one where the dying leader turned sharply on Stalin. History would later tag that document with the name in the show's title. What follows swallows nearly two decades of his life: first the Vishera camps, then the frozen pits of Kolyma, where he is left to rot far longer than any sentence promised. Cold, starvation and informers strip everything away except the one thing he guards — the will to remember it all and write it down.
Vladimir Kapustin plays the writer, with Igor Klass, Elena Lyadova and Aleksandr Trofimov around him. Dostal didn't film a saint's life; he filmed the machinery that grinds a person down and the stubbornness that refuses the last inch. It's heavy, unsparing television for viewers who want the Stalin years shown plainly. Stream Lenin's Testament (2007) online on iFILM.
