David rents a cozy San Francisco apartment hoping for quiet and a little distance from his grief. Quiet is the one thing he does not get. One evening Elizabeth materializes in the living room, insists the place is hers, and then blinks out of sight. David figures she must be a ghost. Elizabeth swears she is very much alive. To settle the argument they go digging into her past, and somewhere along the way the two fall for each other.
Waters, who also made Mean Girls, builds a light love story from Marc Levy's novel "If Only It Were True." The tagline promises "a wonderful afterlife," and the film keeps things warm without turning maudlin. Ninety-five minutes, real chemistry between the leads, and a twist that actually pays off.
