One Night at McCool's

One Night at McCool's (2001) is an American crime comedy directed by Harald Zwart — stream it online on iFILM. Liv Tyler plays Jewel, who walks into an ordinary bar one evening and, by the end of it, has three different men telling three very different versions of what happened next.

Bartender Randy (Matt Dillon) takes her home and ends up covering for her after a shooting. His cousin Carl (Paul Reiser), a lawyer who should know better, abandons his marriage over her. And Detective Dehling (John Goodman), who is supposed to be investigating the whole mess, becomes just as tangled. The film cuts between their separate accounts, each one conveniently adjusted to make its narrator look better. Michael Douglas shows up as a hitman who becomes the accidental punchline of the third act.

What makes it stick is that the script isn't really about a femme fatale — it's about men constructing a femme fatale story around a woman who is simply trying to get what she wants.
