The Brothers Sun (Season 1)

The Brothers Sun (2024) is a Netflix crime-comedy series — watch online on iFILM. Charles Sun is a battle-hardened enforcer for a Taipei triad. His younger brother Bruce is a pre-med student in Los Angeles who has no idea the family business involves anything more dangerous than a restaurant. When a shadowy enemy puts the Sun family in the crosshairs, Charles flies west to protect their mother and a brother who is suddenly very far out of his depth.

Michelle Yeoh plays the matriarch with layers of control and calculation that keep unfolding through the season. Justin Chien's Charles is all coiled restraint; Sam Li's Bruce supplies the comedy by playing a genuinely decent kid dropped into a world he was deliberately kept from knowing. The show's best trick is flipping between hand-to-hand fight choreography and domestic absurdity within the same scene.

Directed by Kevin Tanchaoren and Viet Nguyen, the eight-episode first season is one of the better arguments Netflix has made for an Asian-American ensemble fronting a genre show. Stream The Brothers Sun (2024) online on iFILM.
