Synopsis
Babes in Toyland (1934) is the classic Hollywood musical fairy-tale comedy with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. The story unfolds in Toyland, a place shared by the Three Little Pigs, the Cat and the Fiddle and a crowd of other nursery-rhyme figures. Two bumbling apprentices to the toymaker set out to rescue a neighbor from ruin.
The villain Barnaby holds the mortgage on Mother Peep's shoe-house and demands the hand of her daughter, Little Bo Peep, or he'll throw the family out. Stannie and Ollie promise to fix it, but their schemes to borrow money and outwit the old miser only enrage him — leading to a chase, a trial, and a final siege in which an army of towering wooden soldiers marches into battle.
Adapted from Victor Herbert's operetta, the film became one of the famous duo's best-known features. In the United States it has aired for decades as a Christmas staple under the title March of the Wooden Soldiers. This isn't subtle wit — it's broad, song-filled slapstick that holds up nicely for a family afternoon and captures the charm of early sound cinema. Stream Babes in Toyland (1934) online on iFILM.
